CERN70 and Pakistan

The CERN70 and Pakistan event, held in Islamabad on June 24-25, 2024, celebrated CERN’s 70th anniversary and marked 30 years of scientific collaboration between CERN and Pakistan. The inauguration ceremony commenced with a keynote address by Pakistan’s Minister for Planning and Development, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, who emphasized the importance of international scientific partnerships.

Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), delivered a warm welcome address, followed by Charlotte Lindberg Warakaulle, Director for International Relations at CERN, who highlighted CERN’s global impact over seven decades.

The event featured a series of insightful seminars, starting with Charlotte Warakaulle’s presentation, “CERN: Seven Decades of Global Scientific Collaboration”. Dr. Masood Iqbal discussed the enduring partnership between Pakistan and CERN in “Pakistan and CERN: Three Decades of PAK-CERN Collaboration.” Dr Luca Malgeri delved into the advancements in particle physics with “CERN: Seven Decades of Particle Physics,” and Dr Luciano Musa explored the technological progress in “CERN: Seven Decades of Scientific and Technological Advancements.”

Participants also visited the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH) and COMSATS University, fostering deeper ties between Pakistani institutions and CERN. The CERN70 and Pakistan exhibition at the Heavy Mechanical Complex-3 (HMC-3) showcased collaborative achievements, drawing significant interest.

The event was widely covered by national press and TV channels, celebrating a remarkable and successful chapter in the history of scientific collaboration between CERN and Pakistan.
